ADVICE & CARE
Do you want a pedigree or a “bitzer”?
When thinking about buying a dog, it's hard to know whether to adopt a pedigree dog or a dog of mixed breed, otherwise known as a bitzer or mongrel. Either choice has its positives and negatives.
The best thing about buying a purebred dog is that their looks and behaviour are predictable, as long as you train and groom them properly. The most important thing to remember is to buy from a breeder that breeds for health, not looks. This way you can avoid some of the chronic health problems that affect purebred dogs.
Also, be sure that the dog you are buying is not from a “puppy farm” and that the breeder is ethical.
Cross breeds often enjoy good health, due to their genes being taken from a wider pool. With training, even a dog with questionable heritage or upbringing can become a wonderful family pet. There are so many dogs that need a home, so it's well worth considering adopting a bitzer, especially if you appreciate uniqueness and character.
