Pet obesity and body scoring
Keeping your pet at a healthy weight is really important for their physical and mental well-being. There are many things that influence a pet’s lifespan and life quality, but nothing has a greater impact than body condition.
The risk of major health issues like diabetes, pancreatitis, heart disease and joint stress leading to arthritis is profoundly amplified in overweight pets. Sadly a comprehensive American study on this subject demonstrated the average lifespan of overweight and obese pets is 2 years less than those at an ideal weight.
According to a 2008 study by RSPCA, 33% of cats and 41% dogs are overweight or obese in Australia.
Taking these realities into consideration, it’s important to carefully manage your pet’s weight so they live a long and happy life. Just like in people, obesity in pets can be caused by overeating, lack of exercise, and underlying medical issues.
